Тихоокеанский лютеранский университет [ Pacific Lutheran University], Пьюджет-Саундский университет [Puget Sound, University of]. Первые поселенцы появились на месте будущего города в 1852, а в 1868 генерал М. Маккарвер [McCarver, Morton M.] основал здесь поселение Комменсмент-Сити [Commencement City], позднее переименованное в Такому (по индейскому названию горы Рейнир [ Rainier, Mount, Tacoma, Mount]). Развитие города связано с прокладкой ветки железной дороги "Норзерн Пасифик" [ Northern Pacific Railroad Co.] в 1887. К достопримечательностям города относятся: мост Такома-Нэрроуз [ Tacoma Narrows Bridge], один из самых высоких в стране тотемов [ totem pole] (32 м), Художественный музей Такомы [Tacoma Art Museum], Музей Исторического общества штата Вашингтон [Washington State Historical Society]
